Over the last six months, the future of the natatorium at the University of Louisiana at Monroe has been in question.

Last summer, when the university announced its intention to close the facility citing costs of upkeep and lack of students usage, community members began looking for ways to keep the facility open for the public.

Today, the Univeristy and the YMCA announced a partnership that includes the "Y" taking over operations for up to 18 months.

Assistant Vice-President Camile Currier says the agreement is the best solution for both organizations.

The YMCA will be responsible for establishing community membership rates, hours of operation, programming schedules and special events. ULM will retain ownership of the natatorium and assist with preventive maintenance, insurance and utility costs.

This unique partnership will rely on regular input from a board comprised of staff and volunteers from both ULM and the YMCA. The board will monitor operations and make recommendations to the YMCA's board of directors and ULM administration.
