ULM to rename Nursing Building in honor of Kitty DeGree | ULM Forum 04-05-2013

Kitty Degree changed people’s lives. She worked to improve Northeast Louisiana in every way possible, enhancing services and programs she believed critical to the betterment of our community.
Next Friday, April 12, the ULM will rename its Nursing Building as “Kitty DeGree Hall.”
Many people knew Kitty Degree as a philanthropist, volunteer and community-builder.
Her first philanthropic endeavor was in 1984, when she contacted Northeast Louisiana University(now ULM) to donate her holdings of some 300 apartments that she helped the university sell to establish the N.E. Louisiana University Charitable Remainder Trust, the largest trust in the history of the school which established her as their most generous supporter.
Kitty's other gifts include: the Kitty DeGree Computer Center, which is the key student resource area of the Clarke M. Williams Student Success Center; the Kitty DeGree Pharmacy Student Resource Center/Library; and the Kitty DeGree Speech and Hearing Center.
DeGree also provided funding for the focal part of the University Library and Conference Center, including the entry tower. The Kitty DeGree Bell Tower is now an icon and one of the official university logos.

It’s not just her generous gifts that made her what she is but also the ability to make people feel that they were the most important person in the world to her.
“Mrs. DeGree was an individual who gave of her influence and affluence without expecting anything in return except improvement in quality of life for those in northeast Louisiana. We can all learn from her generosity and commitment to our region” said ULM President Dr. Nick J. Bruno.
Dr. Judy Fellows was fortunate to call Kitty Degree a dear friend.
