Student Research

Parker
Students at the University of Louisiana at Monroe interested in research have a unique chance to get started -- even as undergraduates. The Student Research Symposium held this week on the ULM campus acts as a showcase for the work of ULM students, each working in a close mentoring relationship with a faculty advisor.

Dr. Tammy Parker, coordinator of the symposium, says the symposium can be a springboard for students' graduate and post-graduate careers.

Dance Fusion

Stephens

The end of the semester is a flurry of activity on any college campus. In the School of Visual and Performing Arts, that activity often takes the shape of performances, including concerts, productions, and recitals, many of which are free to the public. One of these programs is coming up tonight at ULM’s Brown Theatre. The ULM Dance Repertory Ensemble will once again take the stage for its highly anticipated Spring Fusion Dance Concert.

Robin Stephens is the head of Dance at ULM. She serves as the artistic director of the performance, and says the concert features everything from jazz and ballet to tap and modern dance.

Totally Rad(iation)!

In international news today, Japan urged a power company to shut down reactors at a coastal power plant while a seawall and other structures are built to prevent damage from a future earthquake.

Students and parents in the Monroe City School District have a chance to see the science behind the post-earthquake atomic crisis at the Monroe City Scholars' Saturday Academy, "Totally Rad(iation)!" at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Beal Case Hanks
Dr. Laura Beal is an instructor in Chemistry and Dr. Anne Case Hanks is an assistant professor of Atmospheric Sciences lead this weekend's event. Beal says students will use Geiger counters to measure radiation, work with M&Ms to model radioactive decay and talk about the ways in which radiation might travel to Monroe from a place as distant as Japan.
