Pharmacy office serves Medicaid patients statewide | ULM Forum 12-16-11

On the second floor of the University of Louisiana at Monroe’s pharmacy building Is an office that provides a vital component to Louisiana’s Medicaid program – working with doctors to make sure the most effective medicines are getting to patients who need them.

The Office of Outcomes Research and Evaluation (OORE) is a targeted research and service facility within the College of Pharmacy. Established in 2001 with major contractual funding from the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, OORE staffs provide assistance for the critical drug-related component of the Louisiana Medicaid Program.

Director Dr. Sandra Blake explains the office hosts the state's prior authorization unit, working with physicians on drug treatment therapies. The unit handles between 600 and 900 calls daily, and is staffed by fourteen licensed pharmacists.
 
The office also provides research and analysis on the effectiveness of health care statewide, conducting studies on the cost of care and quality of care, as well as publications for physicians on pharmacy care.
