For one brief season of baseball, Monroe, Louisiana was a national star. In 1932, the Monroe Monarchs of the Negro Baseball League went all the way to the Negro World Series and brought the African-american and white communities together in a unique way.

A new book by Dr. Thomas Aiello chronicles that season. The Kings of Casino Park: Black Baseball in the Lost Season of 1932 offers a look back to the year when Monroe was in headlines around the country. The Monroe Monarchs' success laid the groundwork for the re-emergence of the Negro Baseball League featuring greats such as Satchel Paige and Jackie Robinson.

Aiello is speaking at the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Monday February 13 at 6 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom as part of ULM’s celebration of Black History Month.
