Confusing is only one word to describe prescription drug coverage for seniors under Medicare. Mystifying, complicated, and intimidating are some others. The College of Pharmacy at the University of Louisiana at Monroe is again offering help this fall at the Ouachita Council on Aging.

Seniors need to reevaluate there Medicare Prescription Drug Plan every year to make sure their current prescriptions are still covered with their current plan, because these drug plans change so often. This is why ULM’s College of Pharmacy offers counseling to seniors to help them pick the right plan for them. By picking the best plan will save them time and money.

Medicare beneficiaries who request assistance will be asked to submit a list of all their medications. Students will enter the drug lists into the Medicare Drug Plan Finder on the Medicare website.

People from ULM’s College of Pharmacy will meet with each individual at the Council on Aging to discuss their plan options, identify the plans providing the best coverage at the best price to them, and help them enroll in the plan of their choice.

To start the process stop by the Ouachita Council on Aging which is located at 2407 Ferrand Street Monroe, LA.  Pick up a form to fill out with all of the information from your Medicare enrollment card and a list of current medications.

Only two weeks in the program 23 beneficiaries attended, and 19 switched with over $22,800 in savings. The enrollment period started on October 15 ends on December 7.

According to Zagar, the large amount of total savings last year highlights the importance of seniors re-evaluating their prescription drug plan needs each year, as companies drop some drugs from their formularies.
